Common Questions
Good question. Policing software can be confusing. Simsi has two Software-as-a-Service web apps:
- RTMDx: Takes crime data and performs Risk Terrain Modeling analytics.
- Typically for Crime Analysts, or Simsi can act as your automated Crime Analyst.
- ActionHub: Project management for implementing policing intervention projects
- For all stakeholders involved in any place-based prevention work. Could be Koper curve hotspots, educational/signage campaigns, community engagement efforts. Anything measurable.
Subscribing to Simsi gives you access to both tools, with the ability to invite any internal or external users to help with the work.
It is up to you if you want to:
- Integrate RTM into your normal operating procedures
- Use Simsi’s DICE model to update your interventions each month or so.
There is training for both and you don’t have to just choose one path. Policing is responsive to local priorities so our tools are too.
RTMDx performs Risk Terrain Modeling analytics, which automatically breaks down crime data into associated categories of places for intervention. Think going from crime data, to “Robberies near gas stations and schools” as a focus of intervention. Using this standard allows you to focus on the intervention instead of being stuck in data analysis forever.
ActionHub allows you to implement those interventions by treating them as projects, that you can coordinate with stakeholders that you invite to your Hub.
Both tools can be used together or separately. You can just use the RTM models in your own reports, or take KDE hotspots and use them in ActionHub. Whatever works for you.
Hotspots can be uploaded straight to ActionHub to be used as Focus Areas.
Focus Areas allow you to distribute the hotspot locations to stakeholders in order to perform interventions in those locations.
ActionHub is agnostic to how you generate the hotspots; you can even use free tools like QGIS to make KDE maps and upload them as Shapefiles.
In general, hotspot analyses do not really tell you why the crime is occurring or give you much insight in figuring that out. Risk Terrain Modeling with RTMDx helps fill that need.
Simsi embraces generalizable systems over pushing any specific strategy. Our tools guide you to update your strategies on a regular basis using data, picking the right strategy for your specific context.
Every problem requires a solution that is tailor made to that context, but the process of finding those solutions is something that can be systematized. Rather than make your own system from scratch, our tools give you baseline to start with.
Online training is self-guided and free. We also have a Learning Center with courses about how to implement analytics, both from us and our university partners.
We also do live in-person workshop with a small fee to cover travel.
