Harnessing Data for Marine Conservation: Protecting North Atlantic Right Whales
In the ever-changing marine environment, protecting endangered species requires innovative thinking and cutting-edge technology. The collaboration between Simsi and BioConsult SH as part of the WAVS Taskforce represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing threats faced by the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whales. You can read the recent press release about our critical work, here: WAVS Publications.
The Challenge at Hand
The North Atlantic Right Whale population continues to face significant risks from vessel strikes. Despite existing conservation efforts, reducing these often deadly interactions remains a complex challenge requiring a deeper understanding of risk factors influencing whale-vessel encounters.
A Data-Driven Solution
Simsi is leveraging Risk Terrain Modeling (RTM)—a spatial analysis tool traditionally used for public safety and crime prevention—to address these maritime challenges. RTM analyzes environmental features and conditions that create higher risks for certain events, including whale-vessel collisions. By mapping and understanding these conditions, we aim to identify “high-risk zones” and explore strategies to mitigate potential dangers.
Informing Future Policy and Action
While still in the research phase, this innovative application of RTM has the potential to help policymakers, mariners, and conservationists make informed decisions to reduce vessel strikes and protect vulnerable marine life. Identifying high-risk areas could guide regulatory measures, influence shipping lane adjustments, or inform seasonal speed restrictions to safeguard these majestic creatures.
Collaboration for a Safer Marine Environment
The WAVS Taskforce brings together scientists, the marine industry, big tech, and conservation advocates united by a shared mission to protect marine life. Our work exemplifies how cross-disciplinary collaboration and advanced analytics can drive impactful solutions for pressing environmental challenges.
Looking Ahead
Protecting endangered species like the North Atlantic Right Whale requires adaptive thinking and evidence-based strategies. Simsi and BioConsult SH, through their work on the WAVS Taskforce, are committed to providing actionable insights that could support more effective conservation practices.
